Born in Javea, Spain on April 2, 1982, David Ferrer Ern is affectionately known as “Ferru” to his good friends. From an early age, David demonstrated his trademark tenacity and drive that have become his calling cards on the ATP Tour. He is known to wear his opponents down with unrelenting strokes, footwork and as Roger Federer says the “best service return in the game.”

David began playing tennis early, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Javier (a former Spanish junior champion and now successful teaching pro). While David’s parents Jamie and Pilar had no background in tennis, they were certainly supportive of his efforts.

The family moved to Gandia when David turned 13, and then two years later, Ferru moved to Barcelona to train in the prestigious Catalan Tennis Federation. He spent another nine months at Equelite, Juan Carlos Ferrero’s Academy in Villena before moving back to Javea.

David turned pro in 2000, and is now beginning his 12th year on the ATP tour. He has achieved a career high ranking of 4 in the world and has earned over $12million dollars in prize money. Ferru continues to be the second highest Spaniard ranked behind Rafael Nadal, and remains in the elite top 10 (currently at number 5).

He has won 11 career singles titles, 2 Doubles titles and reached and additional 14 ATP singles finals. Just as impressive is the fact the David has reached the semifinals in 3 out of the 4 prestigious Grand Slams (Australia, Roland Garros and US Open). He has also been a fixture in Davis Cup play, having played in 14 ties and helping Spain win in 3 of their 5 titles. David is coached by fellow Spaniard, Javier Piles.

Off –court, David is passionate about futbol and basketball and enjoys Valencia FC. In addition to sports, he loves cooking and reading and hangs on to every book he has ever read.
