He grew up at Shivaji Park, a place where famous cricketers used to practice, and graduated from the Ruparel College in Matunga, Mumbai. Ajit Agarkar married Fatima and the couple has a son, named Raj. He lives with his family at Narayan Pujari Nagar on Worli Seaface, which is in South Mumbai.
He represents the Indian team in international cricket matches and is often the opening bowler of the side. Being a right-arm fast-medium paced bowler and also a right-handed batsman, he is considered to be an all-rounder in cricket. His bowling speed is above 140 kmph with a combination of pace and swing to an effective measure. His line of attack is the right blend of good-length deliveries and in-swinging Yorkers. Ajit Agarkar made his first Test cricket appearance, when he played against the Zimbabwe team on October 7, 1998. Throughout the Test series of 1999 in Australia, his performances were remarkable. Despite batting in the lower order (usually at number eight), Ajit Agarkar went on to score a Test century without losing his wicket at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, London in 2002. By taking six wickets and giving just 41 runs, his outstanding performance at the Adelaide Oval, a cricket sports ground, helped India to secure a memorable away-Test victory after 20 years in Australia in 2003.
On April 1, 1998, Ajit Agarkar made his One Day International (ODI) debut in a match against the Australian team at Kochi. He proved his mettle in his very first match by claiming the wicket of Adam Gilchrist, a prominent wicket keeper and batsman. Ajit Agarkar took 50 wickets in 21 ODI matches and created a world record for the fastest 50 wickets in ODIs during his early years with the Indian cricket team. He also holds the world ODI record for being the quickest in taking 200 wickets and 1000 runs in 133 matches. By hitting the fastest 50 runs off 21 balls, Ajit Agarkar beat the world ODI record of Kapil Dev, the former eminent Indian cricketer, who scored the fastest 50 runs in 22 balls in the year 1983.
Ajit Agarkar played in 4 international Twenty20 (T20) matches and took four wickets giving eighty five runs in sixty three balls. Of his seventeen domestic T20 matches, Ajit Agarkar scored 75 runs including seven fours and two sixes. With a strike rate of 119.04, his average batting score during the T20 matches was 9.37. He took 16 wickets with a bowling average of 23.62 and economy rate of 7.63.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team bought this talented cricketer for $330,000. Ajit Agarkar played nine matches and six innings for the KKRs in 2008, under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly. He bowled 26 overs, in which he took 8 wickets giving 207 runs with an economy rate of 1.33 in the IPL tournament.
As of the year 2008, he played his last Test against the Pakistan team on January 17, 2006 and last ODI on September 5, 2007 against the England team.
